Boxing / Personal Trainers
Stephen Ng – Head Boxing Coach
Stephen is a qualified personal trainer who has been working in the fitness industry for over 15 years and holds a certificate 4 in training and assessment. As a Level 1 Boxing Coach Stephen has specialized and built his business around the art of boxing.
Having established Matrix Boxing Gym in 2005, Stephen has created an environment where anyone can come to learn about boxing, feel the benefits of the fitness it creates and the accomplishment of learning the technical aspects aswell. Stephen’s passion is in teaching correct technique to those wanting to use boxing for either personal use or to pass on the benefits of boxing for fitness to their clients.
Throughout his career in boxing which yielded an Australian title, Oceania Silver, Arafura Games Bronze, National Golden Gloves as an amateur and a Queensland title as a professional, Stephen has trained with Australia’s top boxing coaches. These techniques learnt over the years, along with Stephen’s quest to always learn new and improved training methods, keeps you the student always learning.
Stephen is consistently looking for ways to challenge himself and those around him, having competed in a Kickboxing Tournament in 2007 in Noumea, making his Professional MMA Debut in 2008 (knocking his opponent out cold!) and completing the gruelling Kokoda Challenge in 2009.
Most people don’t realise how technical boxing actually is. We try and teach the ‘Art of Boxing’ by breaking down each technique….bringing it back to its simplest, most efficient and effective movement. There are the basic fundamentals that everyone must learn….but from there, once you have that foundation, we strive to not only find a style that suits you, but teach you how to combat all styles that are put in front of
you. -Stephen Ng Nadine Brown – Head Fitness Trainer

Barrie Rainford AKA ‘Ken Barrie’ is Matrix Boxing Gyms secret weapon! Barrie is a former pugilistic warrior who amassed a 17 wins 4 loss 2 draw record as a professional between the years of 1962 and 1970.
This absolute champion fought 15 rounders in the day! Barrie has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to boxing and those that are lucky enough to have him hold a bag for them are going to learn the finer points of boxing and how the smallest things, when trained right, will make the difference.
Barrie’s ‘Old School’ aura and grit your teeth attitude is an absolute advantage that our generation should embrace and try to emulate when it comes to boxing training….the fighters of Barrie’s era truly were FIGHTERS!….food on the table fighters! Barrie holds his level 1 Boxing Coach licence and we are very fortunate to have him as part of our team.
Nathan Brown – Coach
Nath is a true inspiration to everyone at Matrix Boxing Gym. About 12 months ago, Nathan came to Matrix sitting at about 150kgs. He was unfit and needed some big changes in his lifestyle. With absolute iron determination, Nath signed up for the Boxing Circuit classes to help shed the weight and increase his fitness.
And what a transformation. Having lost 40kgs (yep, that’s right, 40), Nath had his first fight in July 2009, at the Wide Bay Titles in Bundaberg. Nath weighed in at 110kgs, fitter than ever, fighting fit in fact!! Nath won, after a hard fight — He was the Wide Bay Champion! Since then, the wins have kept on coming, with Nath’s re- cord now 5 wins & only 1 loss.
Nath is now a registered Boxing Coach and you will find him coaching in the Boxing Training classes or working on those freight-train punches of his.
If you are ever in doubt of the benefits of training hard to achieve your goals, go have a chat to Nath, he is a shining example of how it’s done.
James Katz – Coach
When he’s not surfing or at uni studying Engineering, James is at the gym training hard on his own skills or training others in the Boxing Training classes.
James has been fighting since May 2008, and continues to improve and mature as a fighter with each bout. James’ fitness is seriously second-to-none and he outlasts anyone that enters the ring with him, with hard, fast punches right to the bell. James secured a great win at the 2009 Golden Gloves Championships and won the Silver at the 2009 Open Qld Titles against a very experienced opponent.
A registered Boxing Coach and current Amateur fighter at Matrix, James is well equipped to teach you not only the technical aspects of the sweet science but also the fitness components aswell, with his unique combinations of high intensity boxing drills.
Jason Wild – Coach
A former Mixed Martial Artist, Jason came to Matrix to compete as a boxer, and it wasn’t long before we realised that his knowledge of boxing was not that of a beginner.
Taking an interest in boxing at a very young age, Jason although competing in MMA, was always passionate about boxing and followed the sport continually, amassing an unbelievable video collection of 5000+ fights.
Intently watching these tapes over and over, Jason’s understanding of the fight game, together with his previous fight experience, has made him a valuable asset to Matrix Boxing Gym. Having his first fight and continuing to train for competition, Jason has also become a certified Level 1 Boxing Coach.
His pad holding is second to none and this is proven with current CFC World Champion Hector ‘Shango’ Lombard using him as his preferred pad man in American Top Team in Miami, USA in 2009 on his way to winning the Bellator Middleweight World Championship.
